John has been a theater professional for more than two decades. Though his original course of study is in architecture, his love of theater overtook his professional aspirations and he left his career behind for performing, directing, and choreographing for the stage. John has directed hundreds of performances nationally and is a Professor in the Theater Department at Oberlin College in Ohio.
His approach brings the actors to their peak performances for rave reviews.

John is probably best known for his comedy sword-fighting show "Hack and Slash." The show has been seen internationally for two decades and over four thousand performances. After the events of September 11, 2001, John spent a large portion of every year entertaining the armed forces on six USO tours. These tours traveled to sixteen countries including the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Iraq. In March of 2006, while in Fallujah, Iraq, Hack and Slash performed their one hundredth show for the USO.

In 2011, John’s play “The Ballade of Robyn Hood” premiered to standing ovation crowds at a Michigan Theater. The play received rave reviews and is in being considered by three theater companies for  performance in upcoming seasons.

As an instructor for the International Order of the Sword and Pen (I.O.S.P.), John is considered a top stage combat professional around the globe.  He works regularly with the top instructors  and the choreographers from  both stage and film,  creating  friendships and a professional network.

John is also an expert hilt-smith who designs and crafts stage combat and re-enactment weapons to have none of the usual welds or castings (with exception of the smallswords) that can cause the failure of some modern weapons. Each piece is individually constructed and assembled for proper fit and ring. The Fight Director Line weapons are designed to be safe, reliable pieces that can be used for many years.  View and purchase John's weapons at www.StageSwords.com.
